On The Water

I know the big news last week
was the launch of the Bluenose,
but my big news was finally
getting on the water....kayaking.
Carl  Getting us Set Up

Carl, who lives just up the
street from me takes
 two, four hour tours
a day from here in Blue Rocks
in the summer.

I walked down to the Point and
joined Carl and a a couple from Chicago
who were in the area on a bicycle tour.

We are going to kayak around the islands, Carl
told us.  We could kayak in circles as far as
I was concerned.

dry dock kayaking....no, just
a demonstration on how
to paddle a sea kayak

More than fifty islands dot the seascape here;  the rocks are
stratified slate pushed upward by crustal folding.  At one time,
during the thirties, about 7 families lived on the islands, able to
hop from island to island via wooden bridges.

Now and then Carl would stop, talk about
the flora and fauna, show us the different
shells and also talk about beer, his homemade
brew.  (Jeff suddenly became interested in kayaking).

The wind picked up a bit and we couldn't
paddle over to the two seal rookeries and therefore
did not get to see the grey seals....oh well, guess
I'll just have to come paddling in the spring.

Ospreys, kingfishers, eagles, black-backed gulls
and cormorants flew over head while we
paddled below.

Thankfully, after a couple of hours,   we hopped
onto an  island for a snack of  oranges, apples and granola bars.
Sitting in a kayak for four hours straight  leads to jelly legs
and hips that scream get me outta here!

Skirting the last island  we started kayaking back into the
harbour at the Point. Even after a break in kayaking the sea legs take
a wee bit of adjusting to land.

I walked back home along The Point Road, past the
familiar sites of my daily, morning walk....Photo

 knowing that come spring,
I will be back on the water.

I couldn't mention the "k" word in front of
Piper;  she loves kayaking.
